Remove the magazine, lock the bolt carrier group to the rear, and visually and physically inspect the chamber to confirm no round is present. Point the muzzle in a safe direction at all times.

Clear and verify the weapon is safe

Push out the rear takedown pin from left to right. Swing the upper receiver up and pull out the front pivot pin. Separate the upper from the lower receiver.

Separate upper and lower receivers

Pull the charging handle rearward and remove the bolt carrier group (BCG) from the upper receiver. Slide out the charging handle. Set both aside on a clean surface.

Push the firing pin retaining pin out with a punch, remove the firing pin, rotate and remove the cam pin, then pull the bolt out of the carrier. Inspect the extractor for wear or carbon buildup.

Disassemble the bolt carrier group

Run a bore brush through the barrel 5–10 times from chamber to muzzle. Follow with a dry patch, then an oil-lightly-coated patch. Wipe down the interior of the upper receiver and the gas tube area with a CLP-dampened cloth.

Clean the barrel and upper receiver

Use a nylon brush and CLP to scrub carbon off the carrier exterior, interior, and the bolt tail. Clean the firing pin channel. Wipe everything dry before applying a thin coat of oil to the bolt body and the interior of the carrier.

Clean the bolt carrier group

Wipe down the trigger group and interior surfaces with a lightly oiled cloth. Do not soak — excess oil attracts debris. Inspect the buffer and recoil spring for deformation.

Clean the lower receiver and buffer tube

Reverse the disassembly steps. Once assembled, perform a function check: charge the weapon on an empty chamber, engage the safety, pull the trigger (should not fall). Disengage the safety, pull the trigger (should fall), hold it, rack the charging handle, release the trigger slowly until you hear/feel the reset, then pull again (should fall).

How to Field Strip and Clean Your AR-15

You will need: a bore brush sized to your caliber, cleaning patches, a cleaning rod or bore snake, CLP or solvent of your choice, a nylon utility brush, gun oil, and a clean work surface. Lay everything out before starting.

Gather your cleaning supplies

For most semi-automatic pistols: remove the magazine, lock the slide back, rotate the takedown lever, and separate the slide from the frame. For AR-platform rifles: push out the takedown and pivot pins, separate upper and lower, remove the BCG and charging handle.

Field strip the firearm

Run a bore brush through the barrel 5–10 times from chamber to muzzle. Follow with a dry patch, then a patch lightly coated with CLP. Repeat until patches come out clean. Inspect the bore under a light.

Clean the barrel

Apply a thin coat of oil to all friction surfaces — rails, barrel hood, and slide interior for handguns; BCG, buffer tube interior, and cam pin for rifles. Less is more: excess oil attracts debris. Reassemble in reverse order and perform a function check.

Lubricate and reassemble

Keep a simple maintenance log — date, round count, and any issues noticed. This helps you track wear patterns and ensures you never accidentally skip a cleaning interval after a high-volume session.

The Complete Firearm Care Guide: Every Content Format Demonstrated

Complete your purchase as normal. When asked for the shipping address, provide the address of your chosen FFL dealer — in this case, your nearest Alamo Range venue. Notify us in advance so we can confirm we accept transfers.

Purchase your firearm from the online seller or private party

Licensed dealers can ship firearms to other licensed dealers (FFL-to-FFL). Private party sellers in another state may also ship to an FFL. We will inspect the package upon arrival and contact you when it is ready for pickup.

The seller ships directly to Alamo Range

Florida requires a valid Florida driver's license or state-issued ID for all transfers. Out-of-state IDs are not accepted for Florida residents. Bring your ID to our counter when you come to complete the transfer.

Come in with a valid government-issued photo ID

You will fill out the Firearms Transaction Record (ATF Form 4473) in full. This form asks about your eligibility to purchase and possess a firearm under federal law. Any false statement on Form 4473 is a federal felony.

We submit your information to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Most checks are returned in minutes. Florida does not have a state-level waiting period for concealed carry permit holders; others are subject to a 3-business-day waiting period.

Once approved, pay our FFL transfer fee, sign the completed Form 4473, and take possession of your firearm. We will retain the original Form 4473 for the federally required 20 years.

FFL Transfers in Florida: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

Remove the magazine and lock the slide to the rear. Visually and physically inspect the chamber. Drop the slide, point in a safe direction, and pull the trigger to decock. This is the only time you pull the trigger during a cleaning session — always verify clear first.

Clear the pistol

Pull down both sides of the takedown lever while holding the slide slightly rearward (about 1–2mm), then push the slide forward off the frame. Remove the recoil spring assembly and barrel from the slide.

Field strip into four components

Run a bronze bore brush through the barrel 5–6 times. Follow with a dry patch, then a CLP-dampened patch. The barrel hood and feed ramp accumulate lead and copper deposits — pay special attention to these areas with a nylon brush.

Scrub the barrel

Use a CLP-dampened cloth or cotton swab to clean the inside of the slide, the ejector channel, and the breech face. Wipe the frame rails on both the frame and the slide. Old grease and carbon accumulate here and can cause sluggish cycling.

Wipe the slide interior and rails

Glocks use a dual recoil spring assembly. Wipe it clean and inspect for cracking or deformation. Glock recommends replacing the recoil spring every 5,000 rounds.

Apply one drop of quality gun oil to each of the four frame rails (two on each side). Apply a thin film to the barrel exterior and barrel hood. Avoid over-lubrication — excess oil attracts debris and can cause malfunctions. Glock pistols run well with minimal lube.

Lubricate — less is more

Reverse the disassembly. Seat the barrel, insert the recoil assembly, and slide the slide back onto the frame until it clicks. Rack the slide and perform a function check: charge, safety, trigger, reset. If everything feels crisp, your Glock is ready.

Glocks are famously low-maintenance, but that does not mean zero maintenance. This quick monthly routine keeps your Glock running reliably whether you carry it daily or only shoot it at the range.

Florida Statute 784.05 requires that firearms be kept in a securely locked box or container when stored in a location accessible to minors under 18. Violations involving injury can result in criminal charges. Know the law before purchasing storage solutions.

Understand Florida safe storage laws

Quick-access biometric pistol safes are ideal for bedside firearms. Full-size long gun safes work best for rifles and shotguns. Look for RSC (Residential Security Container) certification for burglary resistance and UL fire-rating for protection against house fires.

Choose the right safe for your needs

Keep ammunition in a locked container separate from your firearms. Ammo should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Avoid storing large quantities in the same location as firearms.
